Makayla Smith
Makayla Smith is a vibrant and determined 10-year-old and a proud member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, with an interesting cultural heritage that includes Métis and Ukrainian roots on her mother’s side. Her family history is an intricate tapestry of interconnected stories deeply anchored in Canadian soil, with ancestral roots dating back to pre-Confederation.
Early in the 19th century, Makayla’s ancestors are documented as living in the Red River Settlement as part of the Métis community, where they helped establish a distinct culture of trade and agriculture. Following the Red River Resistance, some of her ancestors were granted scrip certificates recognizing their place in Métis history. They remained on those lands after the creation of the Province of Manitoba, living there until the mid-20th century. Others endured the hardships of an impoverished Métis nation, living in makeshift homes along road allowances and struggling to survive. In addition to her Indigenous roots, Makayla’s family story includes diverse heritage from Eastern Europe, the British Isles, Norway, and Iceland.
As a young person from the Calgary Nose Hill Métis District 5, Makayla embraces her cultural heritage through both sport and art. She is passionate about athletics, playing hockey and lacrosse with enthusiasm and dedication to self-improvement while building confidence, discipline, and resilience. When she’s not on the ice or throwing a lacrosse ball, Makayla expresses her creativity through visual art forms such as drawing, sketching, and painting. With a keen eye for detail, she enjoys exploring art connected to her diverse cultural background, which helps guide her creativity.
Makayla is also excited about opportunities to grow through writing and is thrilled to participate in contests that allow her to share her voice. With a strong sense of Métis pride, a creative spirit, and athletic determination, she looks forward to new challenges. She hopes to continue learning, growing, and celebrating her culture, while saving for her future goals.
