Running Free is a heartfelt story about courage, self-discovery, and finding the strength to believe in yourself. Written by Makayla Smith, a proud young member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, the story is inspired by Indigenous values, the beauty of the natural world, and the importance of community, culture, and belonging.
Set on Turtle Island, the story follows Ayla, a young girl who struggles with self-doubt and the feeling that she is never enough. Through the wisdom of Elders, the support of her family and friends, and the teachings of the land and its animals, Ayla embarks on a journey of healing and self-acceptance.
This publication was made possible through a generous grant from the National Sixties Scoop Healing Foundation of Canada.
As she learns from stories, berry picking, respectful hunting, and a remarkable dream guided by a buffalo calf, Ayla discovers that courage is not the absence of doubt—it is choosing to move forward despite it. Inspired by Indigenous teachings of resilience, respect, and living in harmony with nature, Running Free reminds readers that every person has unique gifts and that true freedom comes from embracing who they are.
At just 10 years old, Makayla Smith brings to this story a deep pride in her Métis heritage and a love of creativity. A young athlete, artist, and writer from the Calgary Nose Hill Métis District 5, she enjoys hockey, lacrosse, drawing, painting, and exploring her rich cultural traditions through storytelling. Running Free reflects her passion for celebrating Indigenous culture while inspiring young readers to believe in themselves, care for the land, and recognize that they are enough, just as they are.
